Pavoor Uliya, Mangalore

May 7, 2011Travel GalleryPavoor Uliya, Photography, Travel, Yathra Standard

Where it is

Pavoor Uliya, a small and beautiful Island in the river Nethravathi, 12KM far from the Mangalore city on NH48 near the Sahyadri college at Adyar. The bus took 20 minutes to reach Adyar, then walk for 1KM to reach the river side.

How to reach

Local buses and express buses are available from City Bus stand(state bank).

Geography

The 1KM wide island divide the river into two for 3KM in lenght. The river part flowing through the South-East side of Island is the wider one. But the sand mining on the other side seems like, it will be wider in next few years. The 3/4 part of the Island is sand.
(If politics and money is there with you, then what is there in doing such things now!)

Population and Culture

Nearly 150 is the population in the Island. Almost 40 families are there. Among those, only one family belongs to Hindu and all other to Christian. Moreover all speak Konkani; a small GOA!

Worship

Infant Jesus chapel is the only one worship in the Island.
A  360° panoramic view of the church is shown below.

Agriculture

Coconut. (I could see a coconut farm, in which almost 75%  of the coconut trees are lost the head; lack of care!). See the picture below. (To see it enlarge, click on it)
